Overview
TerpServ is the final design vision for a service work and time management platform for faculty in the University of Maryland School of Information. This project was researched and designed as part of a User Experience Research Methods class at the University of Maryland.
Our clients were Dr. Galina Reitz and Dr. Caro Williams- Pierce, faculty members in the University of Maryland's College of Information. They approached us with a challenge common among university faculty: maintaining balance between teaching, research, and service responsibilities. Due to service work’s unstructured nature, it often consumes disproportionate time in faculty members’ professional lives, interfering with other obligations and contributing to burnout.
The goal of this project was to design a tool that would help faculty in the College of Information monitor their workload and prevent service work from overwhelming their schedules. The solution needed to support faculty in evaluating service opportunities, helping them commit to work that aligns with their professional goals.
Our team used contextual inquiry to research and design the final product. Through this process, we conducted contextual interviews, collected survey data, meticulously organized all data into models, and presented a final design based on our insights.
